James Spencer AIA; Leed AP
Engaged in the practice of architecture since 1999, James Spencer has honed his design skills on a variety of projects such as custom residential, commercial office buildings, education facilities and places of worship.
A native of Buffalo, New York, James earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University where he was also elected to Tau Sigma Delta Architecture Honor Society.
In 2012 James founded J.E. Spencer Design in Alexandria, Virginia where he was a member of the Alexandria Board of Architectural Review from 2007-2010. James Spencer holds licences in Virginia and Washington DC.

Set in Historic Old Town Alexandria, this new three bedroom, three and half bath, 1600 square foot home was originally design by another architecture firm. During the construction phase, the homeowner/contractor asked JE Spencer Design to assist with resolving various historic review, building code and construction issues. Additionally, JE Spencer Design was contracted to redesign the home’s interior and space layout as well as providing input on the various exterior finishes.
Located in Chevy Chase, Maryland Mr. Lane and Mrs. Bannier wanted to upgrade and update their dated 1980’s kitchen with new cabinets, appliances, stone countertops, back splash and flooring. Additionally, a beautiful island/table was added to the project to provide seating in the kitchen.
Set in Historic Old Town Alexandria, the structure was originally built in the 1920s. The existing three bedroom two bath home was in a state of disrepair and had become a neighborhood eye sore. The design opportunity for this project was to upgrade the existing infrastructure, updating the existing Kitchen and Bath Room, adding a Master Bedroom suite and Powder Room.
Spencer Residence
Set in Historic Old Town Alexandria, the structure was originally built in the 1920s. The existing two bedroom one bath home was in a state of disrepair and had become a neighborhood eye sore. The design opportunity for this project was to infuse this dark interior row home with lots of natural light and provide an open concept modern design which relates to surrounding historic context.
Clinton Residence
Set in Friendship Heights in Washington DC. The existing three bedrooms, one bath home was in need of an upgrade for the existing kitchen and bathroom. The design opportunity for this project was to strike a perfect balance between modern sensibility and traditional styles.
Gall Residence
Set in Alexandria, Virginia the structure was originally built in the 1950s. The rear of the project site overlooks a beautiful park setting. The homeowner wanted to explore add a master bedroom in suite and create a kitchen made for entertaining. The design opportunity for this project was placing and addition that would not require the removing any of the 30 year old oak trees on the site.
NTC Mazzuca Corporate Headquarters
This was an exciting project where we transformed an existing manufacturing facility into the corporate headquarters for NTC Mazzuca Contracting. (This project was performed by J.E Spencer Design staff while being employed another firm)
